Description

This is an injection-plastic jet aircraft model kit.

The Keldysh sub-orbital bomber was proposed based on the manned space plane Silbervogel invented by Eugen Senger, which was discovered by the Soviet Army at the Peenemunde Army Weapons Testing Site in Germany at the end of World War II. The first experiments, led by the mathemetician Dr. Mstislav Keldysh, said that if the Soviet rocket technology of the time was used, the fuel required for takeoff would be 95 percent of the aircraft’s mass, rendering the idea impractical. By adopting a rocket-and-ramjet propulsion system, however, it was thought that fuel consumption at takeoff would be reduced to a more reasonable 22 percent of the airframe mass, and a speed of five kilometers per second could be achieved to meet the target cruising range of 12,000 kilometers. However, it was determined that the project would take several years, and it was canceled due to the prospects of more practical conventional aircraft. Its design work provided the basics to improve many ballistic missiles.
