Air Transport Wing 62 wistfully bid farewell to its legendary Transalls in summer 2015. The twin-engine transport plane enjoyed an impeccable reputation with LTG 62, which it acquired over 46 years of service with superb reliability over several hundred thousand flight hours. Relief flights to Africa or operations of the German Federal Armed Forces over former Yugoslavia and Afghanistan were career highlights for the LTG 62 “Tralls” as the transporter was often called for short.
The C-160 Transall of LTG 62, with its top speed of over 500 km/h, and take-off weight of nearly 50 metric tons, has been replaced by the new and even bigger Airbus A400M. This commemorative model is equipped with an exchangeable rear ramp and an opening side door.
