Originally envisaged as a progressive development of the F4D-1 Skyray (in fact it was originally designated XF4D-2N), the Skylancer quickly proved to be a dramatic improvement over the Skyray. However coming as it did at a time when technology was advancing by leaps and bounds, the Navy decided to stop production after 11 airframes and devote the saved funds to the F-8 Crusader and F-4 Phantom II programs, both of which were in development and would have replaced the Skylancer in a few short years anyway.
