1/72 Ilyushin Il-40 “Brawny” Ground Attack Second Proto

This is an injection-plastic aircraft model kit.

The Il-40 was designed as a jet successor to the famed Il-2/Il-10 Sturmovik family. The rather unusual appearance was the outcome of a problem in the initial design, where the cannon were mounted in the nose and the intakes were further back along the isdes of the fuselage: when the guns fired, their exhaust gasses were sucked into the engines and caused the engines to flame out. The solution was to reverse things, with the intakes in the nose and the guns further back on the belly behind the nose gear. While this cured the problem and led to the type being ordered into production, only 5 aircraft were completed before the VVS decided that tactical nuclear weapons were preferable to close support aircraft and cancelled the aircraft. This kit features recessed panel lines, basic cockpit detail (not much will be sen through the heavily-framed canopies anyway), deep intakes and exhausts plus markings for the first prototype.
