The P-51 Mustang was a masterpiece fighter aircraft developed by North American. In March 1940, North American — a manufacturer that had just embarked on aircraft production in 1934 — received a request from the United Kingdom and began development. Its first flight was on Oct. 26, and the contract with the UK for development within 120 days was successfully completed with a 102-day development period. The Allison engine that was initially installed was unsatisfactory, but when the British Rolls-Royce Merlin engine was installed, the Mustang’s performance improved at once. With its cruising ability and speed exceeding 700 kilometers an hour, it was active in escorting bombers in Europe and against the Japanese Army in the Pacific Theater. Many types were developed, but the most numerous was the D type. Visibility was improved by adopting a water drop-type windshield, and the 12.7mm machine gun built into the main wing was strengthened to six guns, making it a well-balanced and definitive version of the P-51.
