Since entering service with the U.S. Navy in 1966, the C-2A carrier on-board delivery (COD) aircraft has replaced the C-1 Trader to provide critical logistics support to Carrier Strike Groups. As a variant of the E-2 Hawkeye, it shares the E-2 wings and power plant with a fuselage to transport supplies and/or passengers to carriers.

With its flexible interior design, extended fuel capacity and open-ramp flight capability, the C-2A can perform airdrop missions and fly over 1,000 nautical miles with 10,000 pounds of combined payloads without refuelling. This ensures deployed carriers have necessary personnel and supplies to stay mission ready at all times.

In 2000, the C-2A started to undergo the Service Life Extension Program (SLEP) which included several structural enhancements as well as the installation of the NP2000 eight-bladed propellers on the Greyhounds. In 2011, the SLEP came to completion to allow all current 36 C-2As to stay in service until 2027.
