The Focke-Wulf Fw190D-9 is known for its characteristic appearance and its nickname of “long nose Dora.” The Fw190 was equipped with an air-cooled star engine, and was deployed in 1941; it was used as a fighter, a fighter-bomber and also a reconnaissance aircraft. The D type was developed to counter Allied bombers and their escort fighters, which were capable of flying at high altitudes. Mass production of this aircraft began in August 1944.
