The A5M4 airframe was created by enlarging the Mitsubishi A5M2b’s fuselage and adding cowl flaps and an enclosed canopy. Watanabe Ironworks Corporation (formerly Kyushu Hikoki) added a horizontal stabilizer to, and removed the spats from, the A5M4 base to create this two-seat training version.
