The original ‘Sundowners’ were a fighter group constituted during WWII and sent to the Pacific Theater where they got as many opportunities to bring down the ‘Rising Sun’ as they could handle. Successor units of the Sundowners flew the F-14A Tomcat, an exceptionally powerful variable-sweep aircraft which formed the backbone of US Navy aviation for a generation. “Miss Molly”, a Tomcat from VF-111, was part of the task force aboard USS Carl Vinson on its maiden voyage.
