This new volume of Koku Fan magazine from Japan (June 2023, No. 846) leads with the special feature: “The revival of the US Navy’s black fighter Vandy 1” The article details the US Navy squadron VX-9 “Vampires”, a test squadron for developing new equipment such as fighters and missiles. In the 1990s, the VX-4 “Evaluators” fighter division and the VX-5 “Vampires” attack aircraft division merged to form the current squadron. From the time of the VX-4 in the 1970s until the mid-2000s, the “Vandy 1”, a test fighter with a black fuselage, was passed down from the F-4 Phantom II to the F-14 Tomcat. The Vandy 1 has now returned with the F/A-18F Super Hornet, which took part in an airshow at Point Magaw Air Base, California – this issue includes detailed reporting on the airshow.
